Cause of Death Surveillance data from National Disease Surveillance system between 1991-2000

This survey was conducted in 1989, under the guidance of Chinese Academy of Preventive Medicine. The method was multi-state cluster population probability sampling. First, divided the whole nation into 7 regions: northeast, north, east, north, central, northwest and southeast; second each region was classified into urban area and rural area; in rural area, based on 9 items (birth rate, mortality, infants morality, population proportion below 14, population proportion below 65, average income, illiteracy rate, fiscal revenue proportion), each area was divided into 4 categories: very rich, rich, poor and very poor. Urban areas were sampled by district and county where streets and villages were selected as surveillance district. This way assured that the subjects were sampled in proper proportion.

The database for this survey included three datasets in total: birth dataset, population dataset and death dataset. There were 28 variables, 1033646 records in birth dataset. Death dataset included 14 variables and 516328 records. The population dataset included 6 variables and 27620 records.

Through this database, the public could quickly get information like sex, age, mortality, cause of death and mortality, which helps to set public health goals, make intervention strategies and evaluate intervention effect.
