Network reporting database of cause of death surveillance in national disease surveillance system

Information of cause of death reflects health condition of population, priority of population health control, guide the effective allocation of health resources, which is important for formulation health policies in China. There are two main sources of cause of death in China: 1 Survey of cause of death: there are 3 retrospective cause of death survey in China, which collected information of 1973-1975, 1990-1992, 2004-2005; 2 cause of death surveillance: the development of national disease surveillance system has three phases: the first phase is 1978-1989, which is characterized of increasing surveillance points, but is not representative; the period between 1990 and 2000 is the second phase, which is characterized of developing a comprehensive system which based on multi-stage stratified random sampling method to provide representative data; the third is from 2003 to now, the system covers more population.

Enlistment subject for death registration in National Disease Surveillance System is individual death case which include Chinese citizens but also foreign citizens. Medical institutes of all levels are the responsible units to record death and medical staff who have doctors’ qualification can fill the ‘Death Certificate’.
